Year 8 - Tropical Storms

As a introduction to your studies of weather and climate you are invited to find out about tropical storms. In particular we will look at Hurricane Katrina that devastated parts of Southeast USA in 2005.

Your learning will be presented in the form of a mind map. It is intended as an introductory exercise and you will have lots of questions about the how mind maps should be designed and how useful they may be for your future learning................sadly these questions can only be answered by yourselves. MindMaps should be personal to yourself and they map be of limited value to a small percentage of you.

Aims:

To know where in the world tropical storms form and the conditions needed for them to grow.
To understand the hazard they pose to many in the world.
To be able to offer a case study of a severe tropical storm (hurricane Katrina)
To be able to explain why Katrina was particularly damaging.
In addition to these academic aims most of you will gain an understanding of what a mind map is and how they van prove useful in a learning environment.

Outcome:

Each pupil will produce a "mind map" on A3 paper. Each mind map must contain certain information (see below).

You should aim to dedicate approximately half the space available to the topic of tropical storms in general and the remainder should focus on Hurricane Katrina.

Work will be done in class on what information you should be looking to include and notes on this may appear here at a later date.

AS a guide though you should remember the What? Why? Where? Who? When? and How? pricipals to Geography.

Year 7 Geography Postcards

Your first task of the year and of your career as Geographers at Bolton School.

You have been given full and detailed instructions on how to complete the task. The size of each postcard will be A5 (half the size of an A4 sheet of paper). Within that size you will have a picture (or more than one) and the name of the location you have chosen to write about. Approximately half of the area will be given over to your writing which if typed on a computer will not be more than size 14 font. (time has been booked on the school computers for you to type and find pictures).

The writing.

This is intended to do two things. Within the text you must give a "unique" sense of your particular location. Secondly you must include details of the place's physical, human and environmental geography.

Two files that may help are held on the school intranet (only accessible at school)

They are read only files so to use the template you must save a copy to your own drive first.

Boscastle is a case study of a hydrological hazard in a MEDC.
You need to be able to list the causes, effects and methods to reduce future risk. The links below will assist you with your understanding/learning.
The sites below will help those taught be Mr Hunter complete their presentations on Boscastle.
Remember to include slides on the location, physical causes, human causes, effects (long and short term) and any measures put in place to reduce the risk of future floods. You are also to look briefly at the Lynmouth flood that happened 16/8/1952. (link below)
